The Bachelors’ Greengrocer (총각네 야채가게) – Korea Photographer

The poor blog of this Korea photographer has suffered a lot of neglect recently, and it’s time to get back on track. One of the reasons for this is that a lot of my recent work has been time sensitive, and needed to stay under wraps until it was officially released. One such job was a recent musical by CJ Entertainment called 총각네 야채가게 (my translation – The Bachelors’ Greengrocer). CJ contacted me to shoot the cast of the musical for its upcoming run at Amuse Musical Theater in Tokyo, Japan. In true Korean fashion, everything came together very quickly and 6 days after the call I found myself in a studio shooting concept shots for the musical.

We were instructed by the marketing team in Japan to keep it bright, simple, and active. I chose to light the entire day with a simple two light setup (one high central key, and one separation light from behind) as we would be shooting three costume changes, groups of 5 and 7, individual portraits, and whatever else came to mind over a 4 hour period. The idea was to keep a plain background that could easily be cut away later, and give as many options as possible to the design team in Japan. The video team would also be doing interviews and a short promo reel in the studio between changes.

After just over 4 hours of constant flashes, makeup corrections, clothing changes, plastic fruit flying around the room (and being used as swords, bowling balls, breasts, and a telephone), and only one pair of ripped trousers, we walked away with just over 800 frames to choose from.

Big thanks to Jesse Lord for his help on the day. Couldn’t have done it without you, man! Also, don’t forget to check out the Amuse Musical Theater!

Below are the final poster, and some of the frames from the day!
