The heat of Seoul’s summer still grips us and I find myself longing for cooler weather. We’ve had weeks and weeks of soaring temperatures and unbearable humidity. As I was browsing my collection looking for some work to post, I came across this wonderful Nami Island family photography session from last winter.
When Faith contacted me, she was looking to take her family out somewhere with snow for some family portraits while they were in Korea. Initially, I’m always a little hesitant to recommend Nami Island and we’ll address those concerns in a moment. But, it turned out to be the perfect location for this gorgeous family photography day. We ended up making a line across the middle of the island. This allowed us to cover some snowy fields, some Korean buildings, and a small forest in just one hour. In the winter, that’s plenty of time to be outside!
Nami Island is famous for its perfect rows of trees and its prominence in several Korean dramas and films. Because of this, it has become an extremely popular tourist destination and is busy every day of the week. This is the first concern we need to address. Nami Island is busy. At times it looks a lot like a subway car at peak hour. To counter this, having our session before 9am or after 5pm is the best way to make use of Nami Island’s beauty.
One of the great things about the island, though, is that there is almost always snow there (real or man-made). Especially in the early mornings when it is untouched, this makes for a beautiful scene to have your family session.
The second potential issue with Nami Island is how far away from Seoul it is. The physical distance may not seem far. However, by the time you have taken public transport out to Gapyeong (the city where Nami is located) and waited for the ferry, two hours have passed. Thus, if you’re planning to have a morning session, I really recommend staying in Gapyeong or even better, staying on the island itself. This means you can wake up fresh and make the best of the session. It’s also a great way to enjoy a people-free Nami Island.
If we can mitigate these two things for your session, Nami Island family photography sessions are a wonderful addition to your trip to Korea. In every season, the island looks completely different, but winter is still my favourite! To book your own family portrait session on Nami Island, get in touch here!
